FAT, BYE BYE BYE (888?) - PART 1

During my last stays in Beijing and Shanghai I was shocked by the view of a series of big billboards displayed in several metro stations: they are interesting exceptions in a Chinese adworld that very seldom depicts beautiful women in provocative postures. In this case, however, the feminine body is exactly what these ads have and need to show, as the sponsor is a slimming clinic. I argue these billboards can be interpreted as an integrant part of the so-called "瘦身热" (skinny fever), that is spreading in contemporary China: as a matter of fact, in many public means of transport in Beijing, I saw lots of TV announcements of 减肥茶 (slimming tea), which were real torments, and made me seriously worry about the promotion of eating disorders, such as anorexia (I have to admit, though, that the final claim of these announcements was a careful recommendation: "不要太瘦哦!", "But don't get too skinny!". Sure. Will it work?). We will start with this picture, that was taken in Beijing a couple of months ago. This horizontal billboard opens with the logo of the sponsor (top left): 必瘦站, literally "must" + "thin" + "stop", English name = Perfect Shape. As explained by the following part of the headline, Perfect Shape is a 香港名牌必瘦站, "famous losing weight station of Hong Kong". Moreover, as shown top right, the clinic offers a free tour of slimming and beauty treatment in Hong Kong, 4 days and 3 nights (the conditions are written in very small characters, hardly readable). Following, there is the picture of one of the testimonial of the campaign: 廖碧儿 (Liao Bi'er, Liu Bik Yi in Cantonese, English name Bernice Jan Liu). On her left, we can see her name, her signature and a short description of her background. Bernice is a Chinese Canadian actress, singer and model (see her official website: http://www.berniceliu.org/). In this picture, Bernice is showing her well-shaped body, squeezed in a tight, short purple dress, and is wearing sexy high heel platform shoes. A question accompanies the shape of her left arm: "2 星期想减 6 至 10 斤?" (Wanna lose 3-5 kilos in two weeks?). Then a huge writing appears, right in the centre of the billboard, first in English, then in Chinese: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lipolysis, Interestingly, the English version is pretty different from the Chinese one, which simply states: "Star-grade slimming course", and doesn't refer to any medical or therapeutic remedy. How much does this "course" costs? Only 888 yuan (8 is the luckiest number in China!), but its former price was 4.888 yuan. The offer is time limited, is effective and lasts (有效持久), and you won't easily gain weight back again (不易反弹). As reminded at the end of the billboard, Bernice is also Miss Asia Pageant 2009 Mainland China Slimming Consultant. Good to know. The ad closes with a series of addresses and phone numbers of the different clinics, such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao, Shanghai, Canton, Dongguan, and Foshan. As written in the last line, the Beijing clinic is offering right now many positions, among which: hair-stylist, consultant, janitor...maybe it is worth give it a try! I write here the mobile number (0086-1581471997), and the e-mail address (recruit_bj_adv@perfectshape.com.cn) for those of you who may be interested...

GRASSO, BYE BYE BYE (888?) - PARTE 1

(Liao Bi'er, Liu Bik Yi in cantonese, Bernice Jan Liu in inglese). (Vuoi perdere 3-5 kg in 2 settimane?). Buono a sapersi.
